Our territory

Thanks to the geographical and anthropic features of the area where they arise, the Cinque Terre are considered one of the most evocative Italian coastal attractions, due to their naturally harsh and rugged hilly orographic context, softened by the construction of terraces or bands for cultivation, which falls towards sea with steep slopes; at the points where the sea creeps serpentine into the earth rise the villages, articulated to follow the natural shape of the hills.
The work of man, over the centuries, has shaped the territory by building the famous terracing on the slopes of the sea, due to the particular agricultural technique aimed at exploiting as much as possible the land placed on a steep slope that slopes down towards the sea, it has done so one of the most characteristic and fascinating landscapes of Liguria.

In 1997, at the request of the province of La Spezia, the Cinque Terre, together with Porto Venere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, were included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In 1998 the Ministry of the Environment established the Marine Protected Area of the Cinque Terre for environmental protection, protection and enhancement of biological resources, for the dissemination and promotion of a socio-economic development compatible with the naturalistic landscape relevance of the area .
Cinque Terre National Park was set up to conserve the ecological balance, protect the landscape, and safeguard the anthropological values of the location.

Proceeding from west to east, after Monterosso al Mare is Vernazza. The village rises on a small promontory that is inserted into the sea, reachable by a road that descends from the SS "Litoranea".
It is believed that the name derives from the Latin adjective verna, or indigenous, according to others, the derivation would be attributed to the Latin predial (Gens) Vulnetia, which would designate a family that owns funds.
Its small port guarantees a safe landing place, since the times of the Maritime Republics, in a natural inlet that allows the mooring of craft and makes even more characteristic and suggestive what is considered one of the Most beautiful villages in Italy.
